As we navigate the complexities of personal finance, it’s essential to draw inspiration from individuals who have demonstrated remarkable financial acumen and resilience. One such icon is Rose Blumkin, a Russian-born American entrepreneur who built a business empire from scratch through her unwavering commitment to frugal living and smart financial decisions.
Who was Rose Blumkin?
Rose Blumkin, known to everyone as Mrs. B, was born in 1893 in the Russian village of Schedrin, near Minsk. She emigrated to America in 1914, and in 1917 joined her husband in Omaha, Nebraska, where she would build her business empire. She never attended school a single day in her life and never learned to read or write. With minimal formal education and almost no capital, she built Nebraska Furniture Mart into the largest home furnishings store in North America under one roof, on the motto “sell cheap and tell the truth.”
The Founding of Nebraska Furniture Mart
In 1937, Blumkin put $500 into a small furniture store in Omaha and built it into the Nebraska Furniture Mart, a massive retail operation selling furniture, appliances, flooring, and electronics at discounted prices. She kept expenses so low that competitors could not dream of matching them, and she passed the savings to customers. In 1983, Warren Buffett bought 90% of the company for about $55 million. The deal was sealed with a handshake and no audit of the books. As Buffett later told it, she said she owed nothing on the store, and if she said so, that was enough.
The $55 Million Handshake
The Berkshire purchase deserves the detail because it tells you everything about Mrs. B. Buffett bought the store without checking the inventory or auditing the finances, a thing he never did with anyone else. In his 1983 letter to shareholders he wrote that Nebraska Furniture Mart “buys brilliantly, operates at expense ratios competitors don’t even dream about, and then passes on to its customers much of the savings,” and called it “the ideal business, one built upon exceptional value to the customer that, in turn, translates into exceptional economics for its owners.” His famous test for any business was how he would feel competing against it. He said he would “rather wrestle grizzlies than compete with Mrs. B and her progeny.”
She Never Actually Retired
Mrs. B briefly retired after the Berkshire sale, then grew bored. In her mid-90s she opened a rival furniture store, Mrs. B’s Clearance and Factory Outlet, directly across the street from Nebraska Furniture Mart. A few years later Buffett bought that one too and folded it in. She worked at the store until she was 103, and she died in 1998 at the age of 104, having put no additional capital into the business in the sixty years since that first $500.
Frugal Living and Smart Financial Decisions
Blumkin’s remarkable success can be attributed to her strict adherence to frugal living principles. She was known for her modest lifestyle, avoiding debt and lavish spending. Instead, she reinvested her profits into NFM, fueling its growth and expansion. Blumkin’s financial discipline allowed her to:
- Live below her means: Despite her growing wealth, Blumkin maintained a modest lifestyle, eschewing extravagance and excess.
- Invest wisely: By reinvesting her profits into NFM, Blumkin generated substantial returns, further propelling her business forward.
- Avoid debt: Blumkin’s aversion to debt allowed her to maintain financial independence and weather economic downturns.
